TARGET POPULATION
P'Tones Records will offer a constructive after-school activity based
on music. Modern music, such as rap and hip-hop, are extremely popular
in the inner city. An opportunity to participate in music will attract
many young people who do not participate in athletic programs. This
program can be carried out at a very modest cost by a group that has
already created a successful trial project. The students targeted
through this program are high school students (15-19) both male and
female.
THE STUDIO
P'Tones Records will establish recording studios in the inner city.
These studios will have the equipment and instructors to help students
develop their musical talent and produce their own CDs. The program
will focus on musical styles popular with young people, such as rap and
hip-hop. All musical styles, however, will be encouraged and developed.
The studios will be open only during after-school hours, and will close
at a reasonable time so musical training will not conflict with
education. The after school program will be run three days a week, to
avoid conflicting with other after school programs and commitments .
CURRICULUM
This program, however, is more than an attractive alternative to the
streets. It will also provide a curriculum not common in most
educational institutions. Entertainment is one of the most rapidly
growing industries in America today. We see our future market
increasing annually, in 2003, rap sales accounted for 13.3 percent of
the total market share. While few aspiring musicians can hope to become
stars, P'Tones also serves as a career exposure in the industry of
Music aside from being the star. Students will receive instruction in
and participate in Artists & Repertoire, Marketing, Publicity, New
Media (website), and Album Art/Video Production. All departments are
explained in part two of the proposal. Students audition at beginning
of program to get best fit for curriculum study.
POST HIGH SCHOOL
In
addition, the P'Tones Records will make it easier for inner city youth
to earn money for further education. The skills learned in our studios
will enable students to earn far more in summer jobs than they could
otherwise earn. This additional income could make the difference
between being able to afford college and finding education beyond
reach. Students may also have the opportunity to create money for
college through sales of the CDs produced in the P'Tones Records
studio. Students will work to complete an album; it will then be mass
produced and sold. The earnings will go to both the college tuition of
the students who worked on the album, as well as back into the program
to help give this opportunity to other students in various inner
cities. There is a thriving informal market today in music produced in
home studios, not from commercial recording companies. Many
"underground" artists have achieved national reputations as independent
musicians who produce their own CDs. While we do not assume that any of
the students who participate in the P'Tones program will succeed at
this level, it is reasonable to assume that some of our students will
be sufficiently successful to produce a meaningful college fund. |
